In short

A strength is something at most 3 of the 11 providers we follow offer; a weakness is something at most 3 of them lack. From the facts below, with sources.

Strengths

  • Strength: Encrypted cloud storage also at NordVPN
  • Strength: Free plan also at hide.me VPN and Windscribe

Only at Proton VPN

  • Proton Mail and Proton Calendar: Encrypted email (15 addresses, 3 custom domains) and calendar; VPN Plus has the free version with one address.
  • VPN Accelerator: A set of techniques that, according to Proton, can raise VPN speeds by up to 400%; we have not measured this.
  • Full disk encryption: The provider says all its VPN servers are protected with full disk encryption.
  • Connection profiles: Saved connection settings to switch quickly to your favourite servers.

Free version: our own measurement

Free servers, our own measurement: the first 2.8 GB of a session run at full speed (median 718 Mbit/s), then the throughput drops to about 3 Mbit/s. Seen in 70 of 80 valid runs on 14 days (October 19, 2026 to November 1, 2026); the budget refills after a pause. A single median would be misleading here, so we show the budget and the speed after it per server.

ServerFull speed until (median)Speed after thatRuns with this pattern
Switzerland3.0 GB3.0 Mbit/s25 of 27
Netherlands2.8 GB3.1 Mbit/s27 of 27
Poland2.0 GB3.6 Mbit/s18 of 26

Free servers only; this says nothing about the paid plans of Proton VPN, which we have not measured.

How we work · Raw data (CSV)

Caveats about this data (8)
  • Network figures are stated as 'over 20,000 servers in over 140 countries'.
  • Multihop is called Secure Core, ad/tracker blocking is NetShield.
  • Dedicated IPs are documented only for business plans (proton.me), so it stays unconfirmed for consumer plans.
  • Crypto payment is Bitcoin only, available after creating a free account.
  • Affiliate programme described at proton.me.
  • IKEv2: the download page says 'Manually choose between OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard® on apps that support them' (protonvpn.com), so not in every app.
  • The free-plan page still says '110+ countries' (protonvpn.com) while the pricing and download pages say over 140; we show the figure from the pricing page.
  • We have not published speed or leak measurements for this provider yet. Until we do, this page contains sourced facts only and no score. How we work
