How to read a VPN price
- Charged up front is the amount that leaves your account on day one. A plan advertised at a few dollars per month for 24 months is a single payment of that amount times 24, sometimes with “free” extra months added to the first term.
- Per month is that amount divided by the months in the first term. It is useful for comparing offers, but it is not a monthly payment.
- Renewal is what the provider says happens after the first term. Common wording is “renews annually at the then-current price”, which means the two-year introductory term turns into a one-year term at the regular rate.
Three ways to pay less without tricks
- Use the refund period as your trial. Every provider in the table with a refund period lets you cancel within it and get your money back. Test the VPN with the services and devices you actually use in the first week.
- Switch off auto-renewal on day one. You keep the full first term and you decide later whether the renewal price is worth it.
- Buy the term you will use. Two years is only cheap if you still use the VPN in month 20.

Most providers sell the first term at an introductory discount. Unless you cancel or switch plan, the subscription renews automatically at the regular price in the provider’s terms, usually for a 12-month term.How do I avoid paying the renewal price?
