Do you need a VPN to use Tor Browser?

Facts last checked

No. Tor Browser hides which sites you visit from your network and internet provider, free and without a VPN. They still see that you use Tor.

What solves it instead

  • Download Tor Browser from the Tor Project's own site, linked under Sources. It is free and asks for no account.
  • Use it for the browsing you want to keep private. Only what you do inside Tor Browser goes through the Tor network; your other apps connect as usual.
  • Do not log in to a personal account in Tor Browser if the site should not know who you are: a login identifies you whatever route your traffic takes.

What someone watching your connection learns
Tor Browser prevents someone watching your connection from knowing what websites you visit.

What they can still see
All anyone monitoring your browsing habits can see is that you're using Tor.
torproject.org,
How Tor Browser does it
Your traffic is relayed and encrypted three times as it passes over the Tor network.

Trackers and ads on the sites you visit
Tor Browser isolates each website you visit so third-party trackers and ads can't follow you.

Tor Project on combining a VPN with Tor
While it might seem like combining a VPN with Tor would increase privacy, in practice it can reduce anonymity or break Tor's protections if not configured correctly.

Their advice
Generally speaking, we don't recommend using a VPN with Tor unless you're an advanced user who knows how to configure both in a way that doesn't compromise your privacy.

What we measured ourselves

Tor Browser and a VPN change the address that sites see in different ways; with a VPN they see the server's. Our own checks on that, from the same runs (we did not measure Tor itself):

We measure NordVPN ourselves: 100 valid runs on 25 days, from October 8, 2026 to November 1, 2026, each next to a run without VPN.

In 100 of 100 runs the exit address was in the chosen country, and in 100 of 100 the DNS answers came from the provider's own network. The tunnel offered no IPv6.

Measured twice a day from a Google Cloud data centre in Belgium with the provider's standard WireGuard configuration: this tests the network, not the app, and not a home connection. Download is the median over three test servers; connection time is the time to open a connection to three public DNS services. Our setup does not reliably go above about 1,000 Mbit/s, so faster runs count as ‘≥ 1 Gbit/s’. How we work · Raw data (CSV)

What a VPN does change

A VPN covers every app on your device, not just one browser, and sends all of it through the servers of a single company. That company can then see which sites you visit, so you depend on its no-logs policy and its audits. With a VPN, your network sees a connection to the VPN server rather than to Tor. Who sees what: Tor Browser compared with a VPN

With Tor Browser

  1. Youonly what you do in Tor Browser
  2. Your networkinternet provider, or the Wi-Fi of work, school or a caféEncrypted tunnel

Sees: that you use Tor, not which sites you visit.

  3. Tor networkrelays and encrypts your traffic three times
  4. The website

A login makes you known, whichever route your traffic takes.

With a VPN

  1. Youevery app on your device
  2. Your networkinternet provider, or the Wi-Fi of work, school or a caféEncrypted tunnel

Sees: only that you are connected to a VPN server, and how much data you send.

  3. VPN serverrun by the VPN provider

Sees: which sites you visit, as your internet provider did before.

  4. The website

Sees: the IP address of the VPN server. It still recognises you by your login and cookies.
