Does a VPN get you cheaper flights?

Facts last checked

Not that we can show: we have no measurements in which a VPN reliably lowers a fare. From an EU airport, the fare may not depend on where you live.

What solves it instead

  • Compare the final price, with every unavoidable tax and fee included: the seller has to show it at all times.
  • Compare several dates, times and nearby airports: airlines set their fares freely, so they differ per flight.
  • Compare the airline's own site with the ticket seller you found the flight on, for the same flight and the same baggage.

What a VPN does change

With a VPN a site sees the address of the VPN server, in the country you chose, instead of your own. A booking site may then show another language, another currency or another country version. Whether that ever gives a lower final price for the same flight, we have not measured. If you pay in another currency, your bank or card may charge conversion costs. Which address a website sees

Without a VPN

  1. Your devicehas a private address that only exists inside your home network
  2. Your routershares one public address between all devices behind it
  3. The website

Sees: that public address, and with it your internet provider and roughly where you are.

  3. VPN serverrun by the VPN provider
  4. The website

Sees: the address of the VPN server and the country registered for it, not yours.

Frequently asked questions

Can an airline charge a different price depending on where I live?In the EU, no: access to air fares must not be denied or differ on the basis of nationality or place of residence. The EU air services regulation says so. eur-lex.europa.eu, 2026-10-09
Does the price I see include taxes? It has to. The final price must always be shown and include the air fare plus all applicable taxes, charges and fees. eur-lex.europa.eu, 2026-10-09

What we did not check

3
  • Fares with and without a VPN: we have not compared them ourselves, and we found no official source that did.
  • Flights that depart from outside the EU, and ticket sellers established outside the EU: the rule quoted above does not cover them.
  • Whether every airline and ticket seller follows the rule in practice.
