We currently earn nothing from these links: the buttons go to the providers' normal websites. How this works
Choose by what you need
A comparison you can verify yourself
Sources, not adjectives
Each fact on a provider page links to the page it came from. If we could not confirm something, we say so.
Renewal prices up front
We show what a plan costs after the introductory term, where the provider publishes it.
Providers that pay nothing are included
Some well-regarded VPNs have no affiliate programme. They are listed on the same terms as the ones that pay us.

What a VPN really costs: first-term and renewal prices
Advertised VPN prices apply to a long first term paid up front. This table shows per provider what you pay at the start and what the renewal price is.
VPN prices in numbers: renewal, country and price changes
Key figures from our own VPN price data: how much more a plan costs at renewal, how far the same plan differs per country, and how often prices change.
Same VPN, different price per country: what we recorded
VPN prices by country: we load each provider's pricing page from six countries and put the same plan side by side per country, converted to euro.
Surfshark shows a different price on different visits: what 53 page loads showed
Surfshark's pricing page showed three different sets of prices in one week, from Belgium, at every time of day. We loaded it 53 times and counted each set.
VPN deals, checked: what the offer is and what the price was before
Current VPN deals next to our own price record: the price now, the price before, the lowest price we saw and what each discount is measured against.

What a VPN does and does not do
A VPN encrypts the traffic between your device and the VPN provider’s server and replaces your IP address with the server’s. That hides your activity from your local network and internet provider and hides your IP address from the sites you visit.
Without a VPN
- You
- Your networkinternet provider, or the Wi-Fi of work, school or a café
Sees: which sites you visit and when. With HTTPS, not what you do there.
- The website
Sees: your IP address, and with it roughly where you are and who your internet provider is.
With a VPN
- You
- Your networkinternet provider, or the Wi-Fi of work, school or a caféEncrypted tunnel
Sees: only that you are connected to a VPN server, and how much data you send.
- VPN serverrun by the VPN provider
Sees: which sites you visit, as your internet provider did before.
- The website
Sees: the IP address of the VPN server. It still recognises you by your login and cookies.
It does not stop websites from recognising you through logins, cookies or browser fingerprinting, it does not protect you from malware or phishing, and it shifts trust to the VPN provider rather than removing the need for it. Whether a VPN is worth paying for depends on what you want it for; our guide walks through the common cases.
